RICE-W (Radiocarbon Intercomparison on Chemical Experiments, Water series) program; An Examination of the precipitation method

Minami, Masayo*; Takahashi, Hiroshi*; Aramaki, Takafumi*; Kokubu, Yoko; Ito, Shigeru*; Nakamura, Toshio*

Nagoya Daigaku Kasokuki Shitsuryo Bunsekikei Gyoseki Hokokusho, 26, p.132 - 137, 2015/03

We have started a Radiocarbon Intercomparison on Chemical Experiments, Water series (RICE-W) program to examine whether carbon isotopic fractionation and carbon contamination occur or not on $$^{14}$$C analysis of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in water by different sample preparation and storage methods. Eight water samples of four kinds (surface seawater, ground water, hot spring water, and sodium bicarbonate solution) have already analyzed by six AMS laboratories in Japan, and the results obtained are gradually being published. Here, we report the progress of RICE-W program briefly, and then give consideration to the result using the precipitation method, by which DIC is precipitated into SrCO$$_{3}$$ or BaCO$$_{3}$$, and then oxidized with H$$_{3}$$PO$$_{4}$$ to extract CO$$_{2}$$.

Current status of $$^{14}$$C measurement at JAEA-AMS-MUTSU

Tanaka, Takayuki; Kabuto, Shoji; Kinoshita, Naoki; Seki, Takeo

Nagoya Daigaku Kasokuki Shitsuryo Bunsekikei Gyoseki Hokokusho, 22, p.169 - 173, 2011/03

An accelerator mass spectrometry at Mutsu office, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA AMS MUTSU) was established in 1997 and the routine operation of radiocarbon measurement was started from 1999. The radiocarbon was measured by 1,053 samples in 2010, and the number of radiocarbon measurements reached 10,342 samples since the routine operation. This AMS has adopted the open door policy for the general users from the fiscal year of 2006 and various researches have been in progress by many users. In this presentation, I introduce the current status of JAEA AMS MUTSU.

An Inter-laboratory comparison study on $$^{14}$$C measurements between two AMS laboratories of Nagoya University and JAEA Mutsu

Nakamura, Toshio*; Tanaka, Takayuki; Kabuto, Shoji; Ota, Tomoko*

Nagoya Daigaku Kasokuki Shitsuryo Bunsekikei Gyoseki Hokokusho, 21, p.159 - 165, 2010/03

An inter-laboratory comparison of $$^{14}$$C dating studies with AMS were performed between Nagoya University and JAEA. Two kinds of archeological samples used for the intercomparison were offered from the Education Board of Nirasaki city. One part of them was a charred rice sample with known historical age, which was collected from the ruin of Shimpu-Jo castle remains. The rice was charred when the castle was burnt in 1582, when the castle was abandoned by Katsuyori Takeda during the battle against the combined military forces of Oda and Tokugawa families. The other samples were charred pyrenes of peach and nutshells of Japanese walnut collected from the Shukujiri-Daini-Iseki archeological site. The results from the two AMS laboratories were quite consistent within statistical uncertainties. In addition, calibrated $$^{14}$$C ages for the charred rice samples were also consistent with the historical age when the Shimpu-Jo castle was burnt down.

Time-of-flight mass spectrometer using an imaging detector and a rotating electric field

Katayama, Atsushi; Kameo, Yutaka; Nakashima, Mikio

Shitsuryo Bunseki, 56(5), p.229 - 234, 2008/10

A new technique is described for minor isotope analysis by using a rotating electric field and an imaging detector. The rotating electric field is generated by cylindrically arranged six plane electrodes with multi-phase sinusoidal wave voltage. When ion packets that are discriminated by time-of-flight enter the rotating electric field, these are circularly deflected and make a spiral image on fluorescent screen of detector. This spiral image represents m/z values data as position of ions and abundance of ions as brightness. For minor isotopes analysis, the micro channel plate detector is used under gate control operation to remove from influence of high intensity of major isotopes.
